Yesterday, 8th September, is celebrated as Mother’s Day in the Catholic Parishes to commemorate the birthday of Our Holy Mother Mary. Apart from this, the people of Majorda, Goa, celebrate this feast in a unique way. Here, this Feast is celebrated to pray for the sailors in the Sea working on ships. The Konkani Hymn, “Doriachea Tara Noman” is often sang on this occasion. It is believed that a few years ago, there was an apparition of Mother Mary with her Divine Son Jesus, in Vailankanni and Bandra (Our Lady of Mount Mary). There was also similar incident that occurred in the West Bengal – at the Bandel Church. And so, significantly Mother Mary is depicted along with the Ship. At Majorda, after many years, the ‘Boat-making Art’ on this occasion has been revived this year. Thanks to the Parish Priest of Mother of God Church, Majorda, Fr. Ave Maria Afonso for carrying forward the tradition.
